PAULINUS’ LATE PENALTY HANDS C.O.D UNITED AMAZONS MAXIMUM POINTS AGAINST ABIA ANGELS

The Amazons escaped with all three points from an adrenaline-charged encounter at the Onikan Stadium that wasn’t decided until the very last second as Ifeoma Paulinus’s penalty in injury-time helped us return to winning ways.
An intense ninety minutes saw us come from behind twice with Omosuyi levelling up proceedings on the stroke of half-time after the visitors took the lead early in the first half. Monday Gift who was effective all through helped win two penalties in the second half and Ifeoma Paulinus was on hand to calmly despatch, thus doing a double over the Abia side. For the third game running, the manager kept faith with largely the same starting XI. Obioma Bella who missed the previous game against Edo Queens owing to suspension was restored back to the line-up as Moka Sylvia started from the bench.

There was little goalmouth action of note in the opening quarter of an hour, but then out of nothing the visitors opened the scoring. It all came via a snappy play from Abia Angels which let their striker through on goal and even though Yese did well to palm the first effort, there was little she could do about the rebound.
From then on, the game sparked into life and the Amazons began to create chances. Maduerosi missed what could have been the leveller minutes later after their keeper had spilled a tricky cross in the area. Omosuyi sent the ball back in but Maduerosi just could not direct her header from point blank range on target. Coach Eucharia made an early change, bringing on Sylvia Moka in place of Ogoma Joseph and that allowed Monday time and space on the wings. Monday did come close to creating the equaliser after some beautiful work down the left to tee up Moka but her shot was met by a desperate block.
The equaliser was imminent and it came just on the stroke of half-time! Great show of strength by Monday to fend off a challenge on the left, she squared the ball for Moka whose effort was spilled but Omosuyi was on hand to tap in the rebound.

And in the second half, both teams had a go at each other but we created the clearer chances as Paulinus threatened twice from set-pieces. However, it was Abia Angels that took the lead once more. Some shaky defending around the box allowed the Abia Angels striker a sight at goal and she drove it home. The lead proved short-lived as our next attack resulted in a cross swung in by Paulinus and as Monday attempted to head in, she received a high foot to the head. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Paulinus stepped up and despatched it coolly.

As the game headed into injury time, it looked like the spoils were going to be shared. But there was one more twist in this gripping tale to come. Monday was at the end of it…A point blank header from the Amazons No11 appeared to hit the arm of the defender and the referee obliged. Come the great occasion, come the great lady! Paulinus stood behind it and made it three. Three had-earned points were in the bag. The final whistle was sounded.
Next up is an away trip to Ibom Angels for our final game of the season this coming weekend.
