Omosuyi’s scored the equaliser with a super finish as the C.O.D United Amazons were held at home by Bayelsa Queens in the Nigeria Women Football League.
After a tight first half of few clear-cut chances, the visitors went in front when a poor clearance at the back allowed their striker to score the opener early in the second period. However, the lead proved short-lived as Omosuyi latched on to a beautiful pass from Aweda to score a brilliant leveller.
With the Amazons having not played last weekend due to Pelican Stars failing to show up, Coach Eucharia Uche’s ladies were in tiptop shape, leaving out Monday Gift who suffered a knock in training and had to be replaced by Sylvia Moka.
We knocked the ball around nicely in the early stages without being able to penetrate the Bayelsa defence. However, it was the visitors that got the first real chance with a shot from range that was easily dealt with by Yese.
Both teams were cancelling each other out but we came close to scoring the opener with a marauding charge into the box by Aweda but her low cutback was too close to the keepr and she claimed comfortably.
Set-pieces were of crucial importance as a typically accurate delivery from a corner by Paulinus had Aweda at the end of it but her left foot volley was heavily deflected and hence, a straight forward catch for the keeper.
Bayelsa Queens weren’t content with sitting back and soaking up the pressure as they similarly broke on the counter with some neat buildup but their striker sliced her shot wide of the target.
Pockets of chances were coming and twice we got close. A heavy first touch from a freekick swung into box denied Anuruo an opportunity to test the keeper and although a desperate charge from her which produced the best chance of the half saw her square ball to Joseph feebly hit and the keeper made a simple save.
With a big 45 minutes ahead of them, the Amazons’ task was made even tougher as poorly cleared cross into the box was hammered home by the visitors leaving Yese with no chance.
Coach Eucharia responded by sending on Adeola to add pace to the attack and the move immediately paid dividends. She was involved in the build-up as Omosuyi latched deftly on to beautifully dinked pass, showing great composure as she side-footed the ball past the keeper.
There was a noticeable increase to the tempo of our play as we passed the ball with some pace and purpose while pressing intensely. However, Bayelsa came close to taking the lead with some half chances. Twice a fizzled ball across our goal had no one at the end of it.
The game ended on a tough note as our skipper, Ikono was stretchered of and straight to the hospital after a strong challenge in midfield. We knocked earnestly but simply could not find another way past a well drilled Bayelsa side as we settled for a just a share of the spoils.
