The Amazons could not size the opportunity to go top of the league table after slipping to a 1-0 loss to Nasarawa Amazons in a rescheduled midweek game at the Teslim Balogun stadium.
A free-kick which looped straight-in in the later stages of the first half was enough to settle things in a game we could have taken at least a point especially with Ifeoma Paulinus’ free-kick crashing against the crossbar seconds after the away team scored.
Coach Eucharia Uche stuck with the same line-up that defeated Pelican Stars away in our previous fixture with Maduerosi keeping her spot after scoring a brace.
It was a cagey opening to the game with opportunities few and far between both sides. However, the Nasarawa side came the closest to opening the scoring from a counter attack which drifted yards off the target.
We got into our rhythm, stroking the ball around with pace and intent and almost broke the deadlock with some slick exchange of play between Monday and Aweda but the latter’s curling effort was a straight forward catch for the keeper.
Both teams continued to create half chances until the away side took the lead 10 minutes before halftime. A free-kick on the edge of the box dipped straight into the net.
Paulinus almost made an immediate response but was unlucky to see her well lifted free-kick come against the post. We also had penalty shouts when a shot from Maduerosi appeared to hit the arm of the Nasarawa defender but the referee turned a blind eye that time as we headed into the interval trailing by a goal to nil.
The start of the second half saw Ikono test keeper with a left foot effort from outside the box which was saved routinely and we almost drew level after the visiting keeper spilled a deep cross into the box by Omosuyi but she gratefully gathered on second attempt before Adeola who was introduced in the second half could tuck the ball home.
We dominated possession and piled on the pressure in the final ten minutes but an equaliser eluded us as Nasarawa Amazons ran away winners at the end of normal time.
We will be looking to bounce back from the defeat when we visit Tokas Queens at the weekend.
